Live Music in
Franklin, NC

The band
returned to Merrick's Coffee House in Franklin, NC on Saturday, Feb.25. It
was a full house of people coming to enjoy live music. And
by a full house, we mean completely full.
The band arrived a few hours early to
set up and go over a few songs. After getting everything set up, we
decided to go to dinner. We went to an old favorite in Franklin, "Fat
Buddies." It's a BBQ place that originally started in Florida. The owners
sold out down there and started a restaurant in Highlands, NC.
They then decided to open a shop in Franklin, NC. They have sold
the restaurant in Highlands, but now have others in Waynesville and
Asheville. Anyway, enough about how we like to eat. Back to
Merrick's Coffee House.
Merrick's has been trying to do
something different in Franklin. Franklin has live music throughout the
summer. It's what they call "Pickin' on the Square." Live music is
performed every Saturday night on Main Street in downtown Franklin.
Musicians perform live playing Bluegrass, Country, and Gospel music. This
is the main stay of the music in the mountains of North Carolina.
Although there is nothing wrong with
that type of music, living here in NC, it's what you hear everywhere you
go. After hearing the same songs over and over again, it gets a little
tiresome. If all I did was listen to Led Zeppelin every weekend, I'd get
tired of that too (maybe).
Merrick's has made the coffee house a
Mecca for local musicians. Different types of music can be heard here. One
musician comes to perform children's songs. No, I don't mean like Old
McDonald and Itsy Bitsy Spider, but this guy has some originals and some
old favorites you may not have heard in a while. Check the schedule so you
can bring your kids (or grand kids).
So is Merrick's musical journey being
accepted in Franklin? Undoubtedly so. As mentioned earlier we set up,
went to dinner, and then returned. The place was already filling up by the
time we began. As we continued, I looked over my shoulder to see that the
parking lot was filling up and there were more people coming! The room
with the band was full, there weren't any more seats, and people were
sitting on the floor and standing against the walls. It was GREAT!
When we took our break, we were able to
go on the coffee house side. It was full as well! What a nice turn out. I
guess people in Franklin do like other types of music. One individual
stated it was funny that Franklin's first night club was a coffee house.
So what are the plans? Well, Merrick's
will continue to have live music. A reporter from the Franklin press said
they needed to liven up Franklin. That is what this band hopes to do.
Plans are to return to Merrick's in the spring and have a "Street Party"
in their parking lot.
Although a date has not been chosen yet, we hope it
will be early in the spring, perhaps March or April. Keep checking this
web site on the front page for dates.
And if you would like to hear something
other than country for a change, check out Merrick's Coffee House on Depot
Street in Franklin, NC. Their telephone number is828-342-6767. If you were
there and heard the band, send us your comments. We'd love to hear from
you.
